Dear Visitor:

We are Humboldt County Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Association, Inc. (HCRCBA), a club dedicated to promoting responsible rabbit/cavy breeding and ownership, providing a support system to its members, and bringing a new, annual, ARBA-sanctioned rabbit show to this virtually untouched portion of the North Coast that we call "home".

With an option to promote your rabbitry/caviary on our website, a newsletter covering updates and current events within the club (including upcoming shows and other rabbit/cavy-related articles of interest), access to the membership directory, and automatic participation in our annual sweepstakes contest (launched soon!), not only does your membership support our efforts to bring a new show to our county (a bonus for you in itself)--but benefits you, personally, in numerous other ways.

And it doesn't end there...

Yes, we care deeply about our community of rabbit and cavy breeders; however, we also care about our community at large. Think about this. How will the presence of our club reach past the rabbit/cavy community to benefit the entire county?

A rabbit show in Humboldt County will boost our economy.

Those who are serious about this hobby (myself included) are no stranger to traveling, at times, hours to attend a show. We need those valuable comments from judges in order to know for sure what we need to work on within our herd. We need access to a registrar, should we choose (as I have) to give buyers a little extra confidence by maintaining a registered herd, or if we plan (once gaining enough legs at the appropriate ages) to official "grand". And, lastly, we need somewhere where we will have the opportunity to compete in order to gain those legs.

This is true not only for those of us in Humboldt County, CA (who are often forced to travel hours if we want to attend a show), but for those out of the area as well. Even my rabbit friends living in less isolated areas, with more access to shows, will sometimes (and, in some cases, often), travel hours, or as far as out of state, to attend a show.

Now, to get to the point. How does this benefit our economy? Well, those travelers need to eat, right? They need somewhere to stay, don't they? They need to buy gas for their trip home, and what about any supplies they may have forgotten? Not to mention that we live in one of the most beautiful and unique areas of the country. Who wouldn't want to visit some of the local attractions, or pick up a souvineer, along the way? I know I have done so on my travels, even when the purpose of the trip was simply to attend a rabbit show.

A rabbit show in our community supports focus, motivation, and self-esteem in both today's community leaders (adults), and our youth (AKA, our "leaders of tomorrow").

Living in a rural community, how many times have you heard your kids complain "I'm bored!" Yes, the words every parent hates to hear. "Go play outside! You live in one of the most beautiful counties in the country!" would likely be my response. But, remembering what it was like growing up as a teenager and "tween", and in my experience working with kids of the current generation (as well as being a mother), I know there are less-than-desireable influence out there. Breeding rabbits and cavies, when done responsibly (which should always be for the purpose of improving the breed--if breeders like this didn't exist, we wouldn't have our current breeds!), is a positive focus. It keeps our kids focused on something where they can see the results of their hard work. Something that builds self-esteem. Something that gives them a focus. Not to mention that kids who might not otherwise succeed in a traditional academic setting, might be star rabbit breeders! And to be specific, that's not to say that rabbit breeding doesn't take brain. Yes, anyone can breed rabbits. But to breed rabbits RESPONSIBLY, to IMPROVE upon a breed, to learn COLOR GENETICS, as well as the breed standard THOROUGHLY, and take all of these factors into consideration in a youth or adult breeding program... well, that does take brains. But there are many kinds of intelligence. Although many rabbit raising youth are star students, even one that is not is given the opportunity to build self-esteem, to find something that suits them, through agriculture. Our group promotes the responsible rabbit raising, and the support of responsible rabbit breeders, of all ages.

Last, but not least...

A local show will be fun!

What better way to connect with other rabbit-lovers and breeders in our community, as well as those who just want tips on caring for rabbits and approach we breeders for advice (I love when that happens!), not to mention connecting with others involved in other forms of agriculture. which results in a tighter-knit community itself.

Welcome, once more, to Humboldt County Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Association (HCRCBA), and thank you for your time reading this long, but heartfelt, introduction to our group. We (and I speak not only for myself, but the other executive officers, as well as our board of directors, and the members in the community who support our mission), believe in the vision of our group. We truly believe that we will not only benefit those who breed rabbits and cavies (by being there as a support system, but, through our efforts, end up reaching further into the Humboldt County (and surrounding communities) themselves. We invite all of those with a love of rabbits and cavies, breeding, and exhibition, from Humboldt County and beyond, to join our club. Together, we will work to achieve our goals.
